Sharing a shoebox-sized dorm room with a relative stranger is not part of the college experience for all students. At a few of the universities on this list, commuting is the only option, since some urban schools and some rural schools don‘t offer on-campus housing. Students at many of the other schools listed below may opt to live at home and avoid costly room and board fees or share off-campus housing for a little more space and independence. These colleges reported the highest percentages of students who were commuters for the 2016-2017 academic year.
